VMC850 vs VMC855: Which Vertical Machining Center Delivers Higher ROI for Mold & Precision Parts?
The Battle of the 850-Class Vertical Machining Centers
In modern CNC machine shops, the 850-size vertical machining center represents the global cornerstone of 3-axis milling. It strikes the golden balance: large enough to handle 80% of industrial dies, molds, and automotive brackets, yet compact and agile enough to maintain rapid tool changeover and economical electrical consumption.
At DONGS CNC, two of our most requested models are the VMC850 and the VMC855. While their model numbers appear adjacent, their structural envelopes and intended part geometries differ in critical engineering parameters.
1. The Crucial 50 mm Y-Axis Advantage of the VMC855
The standard VMC850 features an X/Y/Z stroke of 800 × 500 × 500 mm. In contrast, the VMC855 delivers an extended 850 × 550 × 580 mm travel envelope.
Why does that additional 50 mm in the Y-axis matter so much? In plastic injection mold manufacturing and aluminum die casting, standard mold base dimensions often measure 500 mm or 550 mm across. On a VMC850, a 500 mm wide mold base reaches the absolute mechanical limit of the Y-axis stroke, often forcing machinists to use extended offset cutters or reposition the workpiece.
The VMC855's 550 mm Y-travel provides comfortable clearance for face mills and side contouring tools around full 500 mm mold bases in a single clamping setup.
2. Column Rigidity & Saddle Overhang Engineering
To support the extended Y-axis travel without saddle droop, the VMC855 incorporates a wide-span base casting with heavy-duty 45 mm roller linear guideways. The column section width is increased by 28%, effectively eliminating any cantilevering deflection when the spindle head travels to the extreme front and rear limits.
3. Spindle Torque & Spindle Taper Flexibility
While the VMC850 is typically equipped with a high-speed BT40 spindle (10,000 RPM direct-drive or belt) ideal for aluminum housings, precision brackets, and medium mold finishing, the VMC855 offers a heavy-duty BT50 spindle option with a high-torque 15 kW motor. This enables aggressive roughing passes on pre-hardened tool steels (such as P20, NAK80, and H13) at depths of cut that would stall lighter machines.
Investment Recommendation
Choose the VMC850 if: Your production consists of precision mechanical parts, automotive brackets, 7075 aerospace components, and small-to-medium mold inserts where high feedrates and agile 36 m/min rapids drive profitability.
Choose the VMC855 if: You specialize in dedicated injection mold cavities, heavy forging dies, or steel billet roughing where the extended 550 mm Y-axis stroke and increased casting mass prevent tool vibration and eliminate secondary clamping operations.
